Foaming Hand Soap

soap detergent
Mix 3 min
Yield 12 oz (one foaming pump bottle)
Keeps 2–3 months
Storage room temperature
Notes Shake gently before use

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp liquid castile soap (unscented)
  • 1½ cups distilled or boiled water (cooled)
  • 1 tsp vegetable glycerin
  • ½ tsp carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, or olive) — optional
  • 5–10 drops herbal infusion or essential oil — optional — see fragrance guide

Overview

Foaming hand soap is just regular hand soap with more water and a special pump. The pump aerates the liquid as it dispenses, creating the foam — you don’t need any special foaming agents. This makes it incredibly economical since you use far less soap per wash.

The key is using a foaming pump dispenser. A regular pump won’t foam this mixture. Save your old foaming soap bottles from the store or buy a dedicated foaming pump — they last for years.

Instructions

  1. Add water to a clean foaming pump dispenser first.

  2. Add the castile soap, glycerin, and carrier oil.

  3. Add fragrance if desired.

  4. Cap and gently tilt back and forth to mix. Do not shake — it will fill with bubbles and overflow.

Tips

  • The pump matters. This will not work in a regular soap dispenser. You need a foaming pump mechanism.
  • Less is more. If the soap comes out too thick or clogs the pump, add more water. If it’s too thin and watery, add another tablespoon of castile soap.
  • Kids love this. The foam makes hand-washing more fun for little ones. Use a gentle lavender or chamomile scent.
  • Don’t add too much oil. Excess carrier oil can clog foaming pumps over time. Stick to ½ tsp or less.
  • Peppermint — refreshing, especially in the kitchen
  • Lavender — classic, works everywhere
  • Lemon balm — bright citrus for morning routines

Cost Breakdown

At 2 tbsp of castile soap per bottle, a 32 oz bottle of castile soap makes about 32 refills. You’re looking at roughly 40–50 cents per bottle.
