Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp liquid castile soap (unscented)
  • ¼ cup aloe vera gel — pure, with no added color or fragrance
  • ½ cup distilled water or chamomile tea (cooled)
  • 1 tsp vegetable glycerin
  • ½ tsp jojoba oil — closest to skin's natural sebum
  • 3–5 drops herbal infusion or essential oil — optional — use less on facial skin

Overview

Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of your body, so a face wash needs a much higher dilution ratio than body wash or hand soap. This recipe uses about 1 part castile soap to 4–5 parts liquid, which cleans effectively without the tight, stripped feeling that commercial cleansers often leave behind.

Aloe vera is the star here — it moisturizes, soothes inflammation, and helps with acne without being greasy. Jojoba oil is ideal for faces because its composition is the closest of any plant oil to the sebum your skin naturally produces.

Instructions

  1. If using chamomile tea as your base (recommended for sensitive skin), brew a strong cup, then let it cool completely.

  2. In a small bowl, combine the aloe vera gel and the cooled water or tea. Stir until smooth.

  3. Add the castile soap, glycerin, and jojoba oil. Stir gently — don’t whisk or you’ll get foam.

  4. Add fragrance if desired. Use fewer drops than you would for hand or body soap.

  5. Transfer to a small pump bottle (8 oz is a good size for face wash).

How to Use

Pump a dime-sized amount onto hands, massage gently onto damp face, and rinse with cool water. Follow with your usual toner and moisturizer.

Variations by Skin Type

  • Oily/acne-prone: Use tea tree herbal infusion as the water base. Skip the jojoba oil or replace with a few drops of castor oil, which helps dissolve excess sebum.
  • Dry skin: Increase jojoba oil to 1 tsp. Add 1 tsp of raw honey for extra moisture and antibacterial benefit.
  • Sensitive skin: Use chamomile tea as the base and chamomile as your fragrance. Avoid peppermint and tea tree, which can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Mature skin: Add a few drops of rosehip oil alongside the jojoba. Lavender is a good fragrance choice for cell renewal.

Use essential oils or herbal infusions sparingly on the face — less is more.

  • Lavender — gentle, anti-inflammatory, suits most skin types
  • Chamomile — extremely gentle, ideal for sensitive or dry skin
  • Tea tree — antibacterial, best for oily or acne-prone skin (skip if sensitive)

Tips

  • Fresh aloe from a plant works great — slice a leaf, scoop the gel, and blend it smooth. But it shortens the shelf life to about a week in the fridge.
  • Patch test first if you have reactive skin. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist and wait 24 hours.
  • Never mix vinegar and castile soap directly. If you want an ACV toner, use it as a separate step after rinsing the face wash.
  • Make small batches. Face wash uses small amounts per wash, so 8 oz lasts a while. Smaller batches stay fresh.
