Delicate Laundry Detergent

soap detergent
Mix 5 min
Yield ~16 oz
Keeps 3–6 months
Storage sealed container
Notes Shake before use

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup liquid castile soap (unscented)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable glycerin — softens fibers and adds moisture
  • 1¾ cups distilled water
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar — helps remove residue and soften fibers
  • 5–10 drops herbal infusion or essential oil — optional — lavender or chamomile are gentle choices

Overview

The regular and heavy-duty detergents in this collection use washing soda and borax, which are alkaline and great for everyday fabrics. But that alkalinity is too harsh for delicate materials like silk, wool, cashmere, lace, and lingerie. This recipe strips it all back to just castile soap (which is already gentle by nature), softened with glycerin and a touch of vinegar.

Castile soap is a true soap — not a detergent — which makes it much kinder to natural fibers. The glycerin helps prevent stiffness, and the vinegar (added in small amount) helps rinse the soap out cleanly so there’s no residue.

Instructions

  1. Combine the distilled water and castile soap in a clean bottle. Stir gently.

  2. Add the glycerin and vinegar. Stir again.

  3. Add fragrance if desired.

  4. Shake gently before each use.

How to Use

Machine Washing (Gentle/Delicate Cycle)

  • Add 2 tbsp to the wash. Use cold water only.
  • Place delicate items in a mesh laundry bag to prevent stretching and snagging.
  • Use the gentle or delicate cycle with a low spin speed.

Hand Washing

  1. Fill a basin with cool water.
  2. Add 1 tbsp of delicate detergent and swirl to dissolve.
  3. Submerge the garment and gently press (don’t wring or twist).
  4. Soak for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Rinse in cool water until the water runs clear.
  6. Press water out gently — roll in a clean towel to absorb excess.
  7. Lay flat to dry on a clean towel or drying rack. Never hang delicates wet (they’ll stretch).

What This Is Good For

  • Silk blouses and scarves
  • Wool sweaters and socks
  • Cashmere
  • Lace and lingerie
  • Embroidered or beaded garments
  • Baby clothes (extra gentle)
  • Anything labeled “hand wash only”

Tips

  • Cold water only. Hot water can shrink wool, damage silk, and cause colors to bleed.
  • Never use bleach, borax, or washing soda on delicates. If you need to remove a stain from a delicate garment, dab it gently with a cloth dampened with plain castile soap and cool water.
  • Chamomile infusion makes a lovely water base for this recipe if you want to infuse it with a gentle fragrance that’s kind to sensitive fabrics.
  • No fabric softener needed. The glycerin and vinegar in the formula do the softening work.
  • For wool specifically: Adding a splash of hair conditioner to the final rinse water can help keep wool extra soft.
