Body Wash

soap detergent
Mix 5 min
Yield ~12 oz
Keeps 3 months
Storage room temperature
Notes Shake before each use — ingredients will separate

Ingredients

  • ½ cup liquid castile soap (unscented)
  • 3 tbsp vegetable glycerin
  • 2 tbsp fractionated coconut oil — must be fractionated — regular coconut oil solidifies and clogs pumps
  • 1 tbsp raw honey — helps lather and has antibacterial properties
  • 10–15 drops herbal infusion or essential oil — optional — see fragrance guide

Overview

This body wash is richer than the hand soap — the glycerin and coconut oil add body and moisture, while honey contributes a surprisingly good lather and natural antibacterial properties. It won’t foam like a store-bought sulfate-laden body wash, but it cleans thoroughly and your skin will feel noticeably softer.

Important: Use fractionated coconut oil, not regular coconut oil. Fractionated coconut oil stays liquid at room temperature. Regular coconut oil will solidify, clump, and clog your pump.

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the castile soap, glycerin, and fractionated coconut oil. Stir slowly to avoid excessive foaming.

  2. Warm the honey slightly (5 seconds in the microwave or a few minutes in warm water) so it mixes more easily, then stir it in.

  3. Add fragrance if desired.

  4. Transfer to a squeeze bottle or pump dispenser using a funnel.

  5. Shake gently before each use.

How to Use

Apply to a loofah, washcloth, or hands. Lather and rinse as usual. Because there are no synthetic foaming agents, you’ll want to work it into a lather a bit more than you’re used to. A loofah or washcloth helps a lot.

Variations

  • Extra-moisturizing (winter skin): Add an additional tablespoon of coconut oil and a tablespoon of sweet almond oil.
  • Sensitive skin: Skip the honey and fragrance. Use only castile soap, glycerin, and coconut oil.
  • Exfoliating: Add 2 tbsp of finely ground oats to the mix. Shake well before use and be aware it can settle.
  • Relaxing: Lavender or chamomile
  • Energizing: Peppermint or rosemary
  • Warm: Sage with a hint of lemon balm

Tips

  • Glass containers are best when using essential oils. If using plastic, choose HDPE (recycling code 2).
  • If it thickens too much, add a splash of distilled water and shake.
  • Shelf life: Without synthetic preservatives, use within 3 months. Make smaller batches if you use it slowly.
